International Kangaroo Mathematics Competition (IKMC) 2026: UAE Joins the World’s Largest School-Based Mathematics Challenge

Updated: Mar 16

The International Kangaroo Mathematics Competition (IKMC) is officially expanding its presence in the United Arab Emirates, bringing the world’s largest school-based mathematics competition to students across the country.

Organised globally under the Association Kangourou Sans Frontières (AKSF) and implemented in the UAE by ThinkTanks Child Skills Development LLC (Kangaroo UAE), the competition is conducted in coordination with the Ministry of Education UAE, ensuring that schools across the Emirates can participate in a globally recognised academic initiative.

For the 2026 edition, schools throughout the UAE will have the opportunity to introduce their students to a unique mathematical experience that focuses not on memorisation, but on logical reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving.

What is the International Kangaroo Mathematics Competition?

The International Kangaroo Mathematics Competition is the largest mathematics competition in the world for school students, conducted annually in more than 110 countries and engaging over 7 million students worldwide.

Founded in 1994 in Europe, IKMC was created by a group of mathematicians who wanted to make mathematics accessible, enjoyable, and intellectually stimulating for students of all abilities.

Unlike traditional examinations, IKMC is designed as a thinking-based mathematical challenge. Students solve multiple-choice problems that encourage them to apply logic, patterns, reasoning, and creativity rather than relying solely on textbook methods.

The competition is conducted on the same day worldwide, maintaining a consistent academic structure across participating countries.

IKMC 2026 in the United Arab Emirates

The UAE edition of IKMC 2026 will welcome students from Grades 1 to 12 studying in public, private, and international schools across the country.

Participation takes place through schools, allowing institutions to organise the competition within their own premises under standard examination conditions.

Through its coordination with the Ministry of Education UAE, the competition aims to support national educational goals by encouraging analytical thinking, curiosity, and mathematical confidence among students.

Schools participating in IKMC UAE become part of a global academic community where students from different countries engage with the same set of carefully designed mathematical problems.

Why Students Should Participate

Participation in the International Kangaroo Mathematics Competition offers students a valuable academic experience that goes beyond traditional classroom learning.

Students who take part in IKMC benefit from:

  • Strengthening logical reasoning and analytical thinking

  • Developing problem-solving skills

  • Gaining exposure to international-level mathematical challenges

  • Building confidence in tackling unfamiliar problems

  • Becoming part of a global academic community

The competition promotes a positive perception of mathematics, helping students discover that mathematical thinking can be both engaging and enjoyable.

A Unique Approach to Mathematics

One of the defining characteristics of IKMC is its innovative question design.

Problems used in the competition are developed collaboratively by mathematicians and mathematics educators from participating countries. Each question is carefully reviewed to ensure it is:

  • Thought-provoking

  • Age-appropriate

  • Mathematically meaningful

  • Engaging for students

Many questions are presented through stories, puzzles, or real-world scenarios, encouraging students to approach mathematics with imagination and curiosity.

Global Recognition and Awards

Students participating in IKMC receive recognition based on performance thresholds, not rankings.

Awards may include:

  • Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals

  • Achievement Certificates

  • Star Certificates and Badges

  • Certificates of Participation

This approach ensures that the competition remains inclusive and encouraging, allowing many students to be recognised for their achievements.

How Schools in the UAE Can Participate

Schools interested in participating in IKMC 2026 UAE can register through the official Kangaroo UAE portal.

Through the school registration process, institutions will be able to:

  • Register students from Grades 1–12

  • Access preparation materials and past papers

  • Manage competition logistics

  • Receive results and student performance reports

The competition is conducted within each participating school, allowing institutions to organise the examination in a structured and familiar environment.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Problem Solvers

As the International Kangaroo Mathematics Competition continues to grow globally, its introduction and expansion in the United Arab Emirates represents an important step in promoting mathematical curiosity and intellectual exploration among young learners.

By encouraging students to think differently about mathematics, IKMC helps cultivate the next generation of innovators, analysts, and problem solvers.

Schools, teachers, and parents across the UAE are invited to join this global academic movement and introduce their students to a competition that celebrates creativity, logic, and the joy of mathematical thinking.
